Spotlight on: Erin MacRae, MSc.AHN, RD

Consulting Private Practice Dietitian and University Course Instructor


Erin has been working as a counseling dietitian in private practice since 2012 and works in several locations: Arthritis and Injury Care Center, Living Well Integrative Health Center, and Tantallon Community Medical Center. She is also a course instructor at MSVU in the Nutrition Department, where she has taught various courses over the last five years including faculty supervisor for the Internship Education Program. Besides her passion for dietetics, she also has eight years experience as a personal trainer doing both one-on-one and group/team training. She is a mother to two young children and embraces this experience each day. Erin holds a Master's Degree in Applied Human Nutrition (Dietetics) from Mount Saint Vincent University.


What do you look forward to each day in your job?

I am fortunate to have such a variety of work opportunities and I look forward to the versatility my current positions offer. I enjoy working with so many different people– from clients , other health practitioners, university faculty and students to aspiring dietitians.  Each day is different. This is mostly positive but scheduling can be challenging. 


What amazes you the most about your career choice?

The thing that amazes me the most about dietitians and dietetic students is the time many put towards volunteering and helping so many in the community. Dietitians care deeply about making a difference. There is something very special about this field of work. It inspires me to get involved in other ways outside of formal work.


Finish the sentence: I feel healthy when…

I love sports and physical activity and I feel healthy when I am exercising  - running, yoga, strength training, basketball, golf – I love it all and the variety. Although, with two young kids it doesn’t happen enough! But setting weekly goals helps me find the time to feel healthy and happy!


What is your favorite place to be in Nova Scotia?

My favorite place to be is on any of the beaches near our family cottage outside of New Glasgow – Sinclair’s Island and Melmerby Beach specifically have a special place in my heart. It is not only relaxing and beautiful but filled with so many memories. We go often in the summer and enjoy creating new memories with our kids.


What is one tip you can share for future dietitians?

One tip I would have for future dietitians and students is to always use your critical analysis lens. Be confident with evidence-based skills for making decisions. And always use these tools to weigh the pros and cons and any bias to stay abreast of nutrition information
