Spotlight on: Jenny Jeffrey, RD, CDE, CSCS, IOC Dipl. Sports Nutrition

Jenny has a strong passion for fitness, nutrition and health and is excited to share her enthusiasm with her community. As a Registered Dietitian, Jenny has gained a wealth of knowledge and expertise in counselling a wide range of individuals. Her specialties are weight management, sports nutrition, diabetes management, and general healthy eating to support a balanced lifestyle. Her training with the International Olympics Committee and the National Strength and Conditioning Association has given her the knowledge to work with elite level athletes, and take their performance to the next level.
What is the proudest moment in your career?
The proudest moment in my career would be when I finally took the leap to pursue my own business full-time. I had been a "wantrepreneur" for quite some time, always talking about the dream of doing my own thing, but never taking the steps to make that dream a reality. After a while the desire grew stronger than the fear of failure, and I took the plunge. This was a tough decision that came with many risks and sacrifices, but that only makes the rewards and successes that much sweeter! I


What have you learned the most from your current job?

I have learned that in private practice you need to be willing to wear many hats, even if that means doing things you don't necessarily enjoy. Although this can be difficult at times, it also keeps things interesting because you're always learning new things and nothing ever becomes too routine. 

How do you unwind when you are not working?

IIf the weather is nice I like to get outside for a hike with my dog, Astra. We have some beautiful natural trails right here in Halifax, so it's fun to explore. If the weather is not great, I really enjoy snuggling with my dog on the couch to watch a movie with a glass of Nova Scotia wine. 


What one food is always in your fridge (or pantry or freezer)?

Bananas. They are an excellent snack for before or after a workout, and a staple for most of my favorite smoothie recipes. 


What is one tip you could share with future dietitians?

Be realistic with yourself about the areas of dietetics that interest you most, and then seek opportunities to gain meaningful experience in these areas. This could mean going above and beyond regular internship placements and job opportunities. Perhaps volunteering with an expert in your area of interest, or seeking out extra education opportunities like conferences or seminars. Whatever it is, always keep your goals and vision for your career top of mind in all that you do. That way when the right opportunity presents itself, you'll be ready!
