Katelyn Bourgeois, RD

Katelyn completed her baccalauréat ès sciences (nutrition) avec internat from Universite de Moncton in 2016. When her temporary position in Miramichi (first RD job!) came to an end, she decided it was time to return home and connect with the “dietitian community” in Cape Breton.
After a short while, she found her niche in LTC. Offering nutrition services to 113 residents fueled her desire to gain more knowledge and skill. This learning includes, but not limited, to geriatric nutrition. In addition to resident visits & event planning, much of Katelyn’s work includes creating and/or improving processes for delivery of nutrition care to the residents – developing policies and procedures, continual quality improvement, staff education, as well as Accreditation work.
She loves supporting residents to live as they “see fit”, while maximizing their quality of life through food. This is the foundation for creating processes, which ensure resident individual needs/desires are carried out. She enjoys being a resource for staff and families with up-to-date information for their loved one’s nutrition care. Finding her place between dietary services and nursing care, she always aims for a resident-centered and food-first philosophy.
Among continual education activities, Katelyn obtained Board Certification as a Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). She continues to educate herself on dysphagia management and end-of-life care. Always looking to network and connect with like-minded folk is something else that empowers Katelyn to continue to strive to do the best for the residents she is fortunate to care for through means of nutrition.
What is your favorite place to find new recipes?
For someone who doesn’t partake in social media very often, if I am on a social media platform you can guarantee I’m looking at food or baby stuff. My current favorite (quick and tasty) places to find recipes are @vguitard.nutrition, @andyseastcoastkitchen, and @nicoleosinga_rd.
What is your favorite way to unwind?
There is nothing that I enjoy more to unwind, than to sit with a hot cup of tea/latte and watch my husband and son play.. I get to enjoy a hot drink and some laughs and next-level relaxation if there is a woodfire burning!
If you weren’t a dietitian, what would you be?
I would still pick “Dietitian” but.. I would love to work in a renal or diabetic clinic! I find both specialties very interesting. Before I completed my CSG, I was actually going to attempt CDE certification, but determined that wouldn’t be the MOST beneficial for my current population! Maybe someday I will dive into the renal or diabetes world!
