Public Nutrition Services

The Nova Scotia Health Authority, Halifax Public Libraries and Nova Scotia Community Health Teams offer a variety of nutrition programs and services. Follow the links below to learn more and get referred to a program near you.

Nova Scotia Health Authority

Nutrition education and counselling are offered through the Nova Scotia Health Authority, led by clinical dietitians. Programs vary by location, and a referral, bloodwork, and/or additional documentation may be required for participation.

Diabetes Education Centers

In Nova Scotia, if you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes or need more help to build your self-management skills, your primary care provider can refer you to a Diabetes Centre near you.

Community Health Teams

The Community Health Team is a service of Nova Scotia Health in partnership with the IWK that offers free in person and virtual wellness programs that are available to all Nova Scotians 18 years of age and older. 

Healthy NS Online Wellness Programs

HealthyNS provides free online health and wellness classes for residents of Nova Scotia. Classes are developed and facilitated by experienced health care professionals from either Nova Scotia Health or IWK Health. And the best part? You don’t need a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner referral to join a program, anyone can sign up!

Halifax Public Libraries

The Registered Dietitian with the Halifax Public Libraries offers food and nutrition programs all year round, teaching Nova Scotians how to cook, budget and shop for nutritious foods.
