EAT
Looking for fun local food events to take visiting family and friends to this summer? The Taste of Nova Scotia weekly blog dishes up fun week-to-week summaries of upcoming events and ongoing promotions across Nova Scotia. There’s also a spotlight local recipe each week that includes a listing of local vendors that carry the featured ingredients, like July 5-11’s Seared Scallops with Arugula Apple Salad from the Old Orchard Inn.
READ and LEARN
In modern environments with 24/7 access to lighting, humans work, shop, and live without being bound to the day-night cycle of the natural world. Now, with the ability to perform most daily activities online, at any time of day, considering the potential harms of circadian rhythm disruption is even more relevant. Carrie Dennett, MPH RDN, describes circadian rhythm as “the internal fluctuations in physiological and behavioural processes that evolved on a molecular level to synchronize our biological functions to the light-dark cycle of our environment.” These fluctuations also synchronize at the organ and system levels, so discrepancies can impact metabolic efficiency on a larger scale. The June/July cover story of Today’s Dietitian describes the preliminary research into how disruption to these internal rhythms may increase risk of cardiovascular disease and chronic conditions associated with metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity, hypertension), and what dietitians might consider when setting daily routines with clients.
